How to Look Up a Serial Number of a Remington Rifle
Incorporated in 1920, Remington has actually been producing firearms since 1865. However, Remington Arms didn't begin coding serial numbers until 1921. The serial number on your Remington firearm begins with a series of letters detailing the month and year of manufacturer. Between August 9, 1999 and October 1, 2001, Remington removed the date coding from the serial numbers on the barrels but continued to code the serial number on the box.

Determine the month by reading the first letter of your serial number. Remington coded the months as following: B --January, L -- February, A -1 March, C -- April, K -- May, P -- June, O -- July, W -- August, D -- September, E -- October, R --November, and X -- December.

Determine the year with the next coded letter. Remington has adopted the practice of repeating the alphabet approximately every 23 years but has occasionally ignored alphabetical order -- at least up to 1980. I've read that you can date your remington speedmaster 552 by the markings on the barrel not the serial number. In my case my barrel is marked "WF 45". Is this true?
