How to View Shadow Copies

Shadow copies are saved files on your Windows computer that allow you to restore files even after deleting them or making changes that you want to roll back. Shadow copies are listed in the file's properties. All of the shadow copies for each file are also located in the folder container's properties. You can view the shadow copies from the folder that contains your files. This is beneficial if you are unsure of which version you need to restore.

  • Click the Windows "Start" button. Click "Computer" in the menu list. This opens an Explorer window.

  • Navigate to the folder that contains the shadow copies you want to view. Right click the folder and select "Properties." This opens a new window.

  • Click the "Previous Versions" tab. This lists each file and the corresponding modify date. Click the date you want to view.

  • Click "Open" to view the file. After you've made your decision, click the shadow copy you want to use and click "Restore." This restores the file to the previous date's settings.
