How to Make Industrial Milled Soap Bars

How to Make Industrial Milled Soap Bars thumbnail
You can make a soap that will be as high a quality as industrial-milled soap.

Industrial milled soap bars are poured into molds to make the soaps uniform, and are formulated using ingredients that will create a rich lather. When you make homemade soaps using a rectangular mold and a single oil, the soaps will often look rustic and uneven, and will not lather as much as you desire. One solution is to create handmade soaps at home following a few guidelines that will make the soaps appear as if they had been industrially milled.

Things You'll Need

  • Stock pot
  • 16 oz. olive oil
  • 16 oz. coconut oil
  • 16 oz. palm oil
  • 8 oz. lye
  • 2 tsp. essential oil

Instructions

    • 1

Pour 16 oz. each of olive oil, coconut oil and palm oil into a stock pot. Adding coconut oil to your soap will make a soap that will lather easily.

    • 2

Place a glass candy thermometer into the pot.

    • 3

Heat the oils until the temperature reaches 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

    • 4

Pour 16 oz. of water and 8 oz. of lye into a glass measuring cup.

    • 5

Place another glass candy thermometer into the lye water. The chemical reaction between the lye and the water will make the temperature rise. Monitor the temperature until it reaches 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

    • 6

Pour the lye water into the oils.

    • 7

Pour 2 tsp. of essential oil into the mixture.

    • 8

Stir the mixture vigorously for 20 to 30 minutes with a wooden spoon. The mixture will thicken significantly.

    • 9

Pour the soap mixture into individual soap molds, and place it into a cool, dark room for six weeks to cure.

    • 10

Pop the individual soaps out of the molds after the allotted time has passed to use them. The individual soap molds will make the soaps look industrially milled.
