How to Obtain an Insurance License in Ohio
If you intend to sell insurance, you must have a valid insurance license. Ohio requires all insurance agents to be residents of Ohio. In addition, prospective agents must take certain education courses and pass an examination to become licensed. Ohio offers licenses in the following categories: life and variable products, accident and health, property, casualty and personal lines.

Enroll and complete prelicensing education in the area or areas that you want to be licensed in. You can choose to enroll in a 20-hour classroom course or complete a self-study course. The Ohio Department of Insurance (ODI) keeps lists of approved prelicense education programs. Call or visit the ODI website for a list of education courses.

Contact Pearson VUE and sign up to take an exam in the insurance field or fields you wish to specialize in. After completing your prelicense education, you have 180 days to take the appropriate exam or exams. Call or visit Pearson VUE's website to schedule your exam. You will receive an exam confirmation number after registering.

Study for and pass the applicable insurance examinations. Study outlines are available from Pearson VUE. At the exam, bring two forms of identification, the prelicense education certificate and your exam confirmation number.

Undergo an electronic criminal background check using WebCheck. According to the Ohio Department of Insurance, WebCheck facilities are located at all Pearson VUE Ohio test centers.

Complete the Uniform Registered Agent Application. Online applications are available at all Pearson VUE Ohio test centers. Paper applications are available from the ODI.
