Restoring the clarity of your headlights improves the safety and appearance of your vehicle.

Fogged headlights are not only an unsightly problem, but they can also become dangerous if left untreated and begin to effect the performance of the headlight. The fogged look of the headlight occurs because of a process called oxidization, which happens when moisture becomes trapped in the headlight and evaporates. Thankfully, there is a quick fix for this problem using simple products that you might already have available in your home.

Things You'll Need

  • Water
  • Shallow bowl

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the corner headlight according to the instructions in your vehicle's owner manual.

    • 2

Dip a soft-bristled toothbrush in a shallow bowl of warm water and 1 tbsp. of dishwashing liquid.

    • 3

Scrub the soap and water solution onto the headlight with the toothbrush to loosen dirt or debris. Pay extra attention to any small spaces or especially soiled areas.

    • 4

Rinse the toothbrush with clear water and add about 1 tsp. of toothpaste directly onto the toothbrush.

    • 5

Scrub the headlight thoroughly using the toothbrush. The abrasiveness of the toothpaste will cut though any remaining fog or film without harming the headlight.

    • 6

Wipe all toothpaste off of the headlight using a wet cleaning rag right after scrubbing. Remove the toothpaste immediately after scrubbing to prevent buildup.

    • 7

Spray a small amount of cooking spray onto a dry cleaning rag and rub it onto the headlight. This restores the clarity of the headlight and adds protection against further buildup.

Tips & Warnings

  • Any brand of toothpaste will work, but ensure that it is in paste form, not gel.
