How to Make Large Wall Stencils
Oversize wall stencils are handy tools that can be used to create unconventional, artistic room accents. Wall designs made using large stencils can add visual interest to an area without taking up physical space or making a room seem cluttered. Larger than average stencils require more work to construct than small stencils, but they can be used to produce unusual shapes and patterns that may be big enough to serve as the basis for an original room designs. - Image for stenciling
- Overhead projector sheet
- Overhead projector
- Poster board
- Craft knife
- Cutting board
- Painter's tape
- Interior latex paint
- Paint roller
- Paint tray
- Small artist's brush

Select an image to use for stenciling. Choose a picture with crisp lines that is not at all blurry. You will be enlarging the image, so it should still have clean traceable lines when quadrupled in size.

Print your image onto overhead projector paper or take it to a copy shop to have it transferred to an overhead sheet.

Tape the poster board to a wall and use an overhead projector to project the image onto it.

Trace the outline of the image with a pencil.

Remove the stencil from the wall and lay it on a cutting board or protected surface.

Cut along the pencil line using a craft knife. Follow the entire perimeter of the stencil, then gently pop out the excess poster board.

Secure the stencil to the wall using painter's tape.

Pour a small amount of interior latex paint into a paint tray. Spread it along the tray with a roller until the roller head is evenly covered.

Paint over the stencil with the roller, applying as little paint as required to achieve an even-colored surface.

Allow the paint to dry for the time outlined by the paint manufacturer, then carefully peel away the stencil. Touch up any blotchy areas or uneven edges with a fine-tipped paint brush.

Tips & Warnings
For extremely large designs, trace the projected image directly onto the wall and fill it in with paint using medium and small brushes.
