How to Submit to the Top 10 Search Engines
Though the top 10 search engines list does fluctuate, Google, Yahoo!, Bing (formerly MSN Search) and Ask.com are stable at the top. One shouldn't, however, forget other top search engines, such as Lycos and HotBot, Dogpile, AltaVista and Web Crawler, though they get their information from the major search engines. Getting your site on Ask.com is more complicated than submitting to the other three main search engines. Ask.com require you to have knowledge of sitemaps, but the other three top search engines merely take your homepage url and search your site from there.

Fill in the URL section with the link to your website's homepage, complete with the "http" prefix. Add a brief description of your website in the comments box, though this is optional.

Click on the "Add URL" button to complete the submission. The homepage is the only URL you need to submit, as Google will trawl a website via its homepage.

Click on the "Submit your site for free" link. Select "submit a website or webpage."

Type your homepage URL in the submission box. Click on "Submit Url." You can submit your site for review, and possible inclusion in the Yahoo! Directory, but the latter isn't free.

Tips & Warnings
There are free search engine submission services, such as AddMe, that will submit your site to Google, as well as other smaller search engines. Submit your sites to niche search engines and directories that are relevant to your site's content.
Don't expect to get masses of hits just by submitting information about your website alone. Search engine submission is just one aspect of many in promoting your website.
