Become a Smartphone Developer

As the popularity of smartphones like the iPhone, BlackBerry and Droid increases, so does the demand for new smartphone applications from innovative smartphone developers. If you have experience with programming and coding, along with a creative idea for an app, you may want to register to become a smartphone developer. Each platform has a slightly different process for smartphone developer registration, along with specific software and applications you will need to download in order to start creating your app.

Instructions

  1. iPhone

    • 1

      Go to the iPhone Dev Center (see Resources) and click "Register." Your registration will give you access to technical resources on iPhone app development.

      Click "Get Started." Use your Apple ID if you already have one, or create a new Apple ID to use as a developer. Fill out the form with the requested information, which includes both personal data and information on the type of app you want to develop.

      Download Xcode IDE, Dashcode, Instruments, Interface Builder, and iPhone Simulator to begin coding your app. You also will need a Mac running OS X or later, and an iPhone for testing your app.

    BlackBerry

      Go to the BlackBerry Developer Zone (see Resources), and click "Register for Free."

      Fill out the form with the requested information, including your name, contact information and email address. Confirm your registration through your email.

      Choose your development approach, as BlackBerry offers several. Options include web development and Java Application development. BlackBerry also offers an array of tutorials for new developers.

    Android

    • 7

      Go to the Android Developer's website (see Resources). Click the "Dev Guide" tab to learn more about being a developer (Android does not require registration).

      Click "Download" to download the package of programs you will need for Android development. Packages are available for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.

      Launch the Android SDK and AVD Manager from Step 2 once it is installed to begin creating your Android app.
