How to Choose Quality Carpet

How to Choose Quality Carpet thumbnail
Choose quality carpet that will hold up to wear.

Purchasing carpet for your home can be a big investment. When you choose new carpet, low-cost options may seem enticing, but a more expensive choice may be a better investment. Quality carpet will look new for longer and feel softer below your feet. Low quality carpet may mat and stain, and may cost more in the long run if you have to replace it soon after you purchased it. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Look at the fiber content of the carpet. Polypropylene is best used in in firm carpets and stands up to wear well. Nylon resists wear, staining and fading. Wool stands up to wear well, but must be cleaned immediately after a spill to prevent stains. Polyester resists stains, but can look worn with lots of foot traffic. Each of these properties should be considered when looking for a carpet that will fit your lifestyle.

Choose a color that will resist fading, especially if it is for a room with lots of windows and natural light. Fading may occur because of the dying process or the type of carpet fiber. While lighter carpets will not fade, they will show dirt and wear, so be sure to choose a color that is compatible with your lifestyle. Choosing a color that is current, but neutral, will allow you to change decor as desired and give your floors a look you want to keep for years to come.

Stain resistant carpet is a good investment for high traffic areas and for households with children and pets. Carpets labeled as stain resistant have been treated with a chemical to help it repel dirt and keep it from absorbing moisture. Stain resistant carpet is often guaranteed, so the manufacturer will clean or replace stained carpet for you.

Invest in a high quality carpet pad. This will give added comfort for your feet and will stand up to wear, especially in high traffic areas like stairs and hallways. Carpet pad is an investment you won't see, but you will feel, especially if you choose a poor quality one that wears quickly.
