How to Remove a MicroSD Card

Many modern cell phones have a microSD card already installed upon purchase. A microSD card allows you to save your media files, such as pictures and songs, from your phone to a card, so you can then insert it into your computer or transfer it to another phone. Although the microSD card removal process varies for all phones, most have similar removal methods.

  • Turn over your phone so that the screen is facing down. Remove the battery cover. Most battery covers can be removed by pressing down and either pulling the cover towards you or pushing the cover away from you. Look at the cover itself; if the latch is at the top, then you can usually remove the cover by pulling it towards your body.

  • Look for a black card. You may not be able to see the entire card, but you should be able to see the bottom end. It's small, roughly a half an inch across. You may have to remove the battery to see the card.

  • Place your fingernail on the bottom of the card and pull the card away from its slot. Do not apply too much force; gently pull it. If it does not come out, you may be attempting to remove the wrong item. "MicroSD" may be printed near the card slot, but the slot is not identified on many phones. Other phones may have a locking compartment to house microSD cards. You can simply unlock the compartment and remove the SD card from the slot on those phones.

Tips & Warnings

  • Cell phones do not have a universal way of inserting and removing microSD cards, so you may find the removal process drastically changes from phone to phone. Most phones have similar removal processes as listed above, but other phones may have different ways of removing a microSD card. If you cannot find the card in your phone's battery compartment, consult the customer service department of your wireless provider.
