How to Install Windows Office to a Different Drive

Microsoft Office has several applications that help productivity in the home or in the office. The full package of Microsoft Office includes Excel, Powerpoint, Access, Word, Outlook and more. The Office installation wizard defaults to the C drive when installing the software. However, you can customize the installation and store the Office files on another hard drive. This is beneficial if your C drive storage space is running low.

Things You'll Need

  • Office installation DVD
  • Insert the DVD into the drive. Windows automatically detects the installation DVD, and a splash screen opens.

  • Type your product ID number. This is the license key included with your software. It is located on the DVD package highlighted in yellow. Click "Next."

  • Check the box confirming that you agree to the license terms and click "Next." The next window has a "Customize" button. Click "Customize." This opens the option to install the software to a different drive.

  • Check each Office application that you want to install and click "Next." Click "Browse" in the next window and choose the alternative hard drive where you want to store the files. Click "Next."

  • Click "Install" on the final screen. The installation wizard copies the files to your other specified hard drive.
