How to Calculate Volumetric Airfreight

How to Calculate Volumetric Airfreight thumbnail
Volumetric airfreight is an alternative measure for shipping.

Volumetric airfreight, dimensional weight and volumetric weight are all terms for an alternative measure for air charges, and are used by some shipping companies in place of weight to determine charges. The logic for this is that if you are shipping cotton, it may not weigh a lot, but it can take up a lot of space that could otherwise be making money for the shipper. It is generally calculated in centimeters, and based on the volume of your package. The final result is a volumetric weight expressed in kilograms.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length, width and height of your package in centimeters.

    • 2

Multiply the length by the width, and then multiply the result by the height to get the volume in centimeters. As an example, if your package is 70 cm by 50 cm by 40 cm, the total volume is 140,000 cubic cm.

    • 3

Divide the volume of your package in cubic centimeters by 6,000 to get your volumetric air freight total. Here, the result is 23.22 volumetric kilograms.
