How to Know What Drive a 360 Will Have
Microsoft's Xbox 360 has gone through many subtle hardware revisions since its launch in 2005. The 360's DVD-Rom drive in particular has gone through three subtle variations, each producing a quieter drive than the last. For some gamers, receiving a DVD-Rom drive that runs as quiet as possible is of importance. By opening the DVD-Rom drive and examining the shape of the tray, you can determine which drive your 360 has.

Examine the shape of the hole in the center of the tray. If the hole is shaped like a square that turns into a circle, you have the Toshiba-Samsung drive. If the hole is circular shaped with two small circles notched into the sides, you own a Hitachi-LG DVD drive. If the hole is perfectly circular, you own a BenQ drive.

Tips & Warnings
The Hitachi-LG drive was the first drive Microsoft used in the Xbox 360 and was subsequently the loudest drive of all three when loading a game or accessing the DVD. The Samsung-Toshiba drive is slightly less loud than the Hitachi-LG, and the BenQ drive is the newest and last drive and has minimal noise. All Xbox 360s bought new at retail are equipped with the BenQ drive.
