A properly-fitting helmet should be a number one priority for your safety.

A helmet is hands-down the most important piece of safety gear for riding your motorcycle. Head injuries are a commonly-cited factor in motorcycle accident fatalities, and ensuring that your helmet fits properly is the most important part of choosing the right helmet. A poor fit can affect the safety of a helmet in an accident, possibly even causing it to come off. As a result, a proper fit and long-term comfort should be your top priority when selecting a helmet.

Place the measuring tape just above your ears, wrapping the tape around your head from the back to the front.

    • 2

Check the measurement at your forehead -- this should be the widest part of your head. At the front of your head, the tape measure should be placed approximately an inch above your eyebrows.

    • 3

Check the helmet sizing chart with the manufacturer that you intend to purchase a helmet from. Most manufacturers size their helmets differently; even some models within the same manufacturer have different sizing guidelines.

Try on different helmets. Even when the measurements are accurate to the recommended sizing, different helmets feel comfortable for different head types. The padding at the top and along the sides can have different firmness and thickness depending on the individual helmet.
