How to Salute the Confederate Flag
The Confederate States of America was a coalition of 11 southern states that seceded from the United States of America in 1861. A major reason for their secession was to continue the practice of slavery, which northern states had abolished. With this confederation came its own flag. Just as American citizens salute the flag by placing a hand over their heart and reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, the Confederate States of America had a pledge and ritual of its own.

Stand at attention while facing the Confederate Flag.

Place your right hand over your heart, on the left side of your chest.

Recite the Confederate Pledge of Allegiance as follows:
"I pledge allegiance to the Constitution of the Confederate States of America,
And to the Republics
Through which it stands,
our nation, under Almighty God,
With Liberty and Justice for all."

The Southern states seceded because of economic issues. The government had become repressive in the laws which dealt with the commerce of the South. Slavery was condoned in Northern states as well and it was an accepted fact that it would die out in due course.

That is not the Confederate pledge. The Rebel pledge is "I salute the Confederate flag with affection, reverence, and undying devotion to the cause for which it stands." And that cause was the Constitution and not slavery as we are misled to believe.
