Canceling an alarm agreement is easy when it is done in writing.

Monitronics International is an alarm monitoring company headquartered in Dallas, Texas. The company provides home security alarm systems, smoke and fire alarms and carbon monoxide detectors to its customers nationwide. When customers initiate service with Monitronics, they enter into service agreements. These agreements vary in length and can be canceled at any time. However, if a cancellation occurs before the service term is completed, a fee may be charged. After the service term is completed, alarm service automatically renews on a month-to-month basis unless the customer cancels the service.

  1. How to Cancel Service with Monitronics

      Locate the service agreement you signed when you began service with Monitronics. This agreement will list the service term or length of time that you agreed to pay Monitronics for alarm system or other detection services. Read the entire terms of the agreement and familiarize yourself with its provisions.

      Locate Section 3, "Service Fees & Term of Agreement" to determine the length of your agreement (number of months) and cancellation provisions. Most Monitronics agreements allow cancellation if the customer gives proper written notice at least 30 days before the end of the service term. If you are already in a renewal term, you can cancel your service by providing 30 days proper written notice.

      Write a letter stating your desire to cancel your service to Monitronics. Locate your customer number, which should be printed near the top right of your most recent Monitronics statement. This number has seven digits and should be located above the printed statement date. Mail or fax a written letter of cancellation to:

      Reference your customer number in the subject line of your letter. In the body of your letter state that you would like to cancel your alarm service "effective immediately" or upon a specific date if not immediately. In the letter's close, list your contact information and customer number:

      Customer name

      Customer city, state and ZIP code

      Customer phone number

      Follow up your cancellation letter with a phone call to Monitronics' service line at 800-447-9239 to notify company representatives that you have faxed or mailed a cancellation letter. Monitor your request and note the names of any Monitronics' personnel you speak with about your cancellation of service. If you do not receive written notice from Monitronics that it has canceled your service within 45 days of the date you sent your cancellation notice, contact Monitronics again to verify that it has received and completed your cancellation request.
