How to Repair Distorted Audio

How to Repair Distorted Audio thumbnail
Distorted audio is both a distraction and annoyance.

Your computer's audio can become distorted for a number of reasons, from faulty speakers to inappropriate drivers. A very common reason for this problem, however, is that you have multiple system volume controls that are turned up too far, crossing each other and creating distortion. If you have tried different speakers and updating your drivers but the audio still distorts, you can quickly correct the problem by lowering advanced volume controls.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate and open "Volume Preferences." In Windows, it is located under "Start" and "Control Panel." In Mac OS, go to "Preferences" and open "Volume." In Linux, its location depends on your version; usually it can be found under "System" and "Preferences."

    • 2

Set the "Main" or "Stereo Output" volume slider to the halfway point. Click "Mute" on other "Output" devices, such as "CD," "Aux" and "WAV." This stops any other audio signals from interfering with your main audio output.

    • 3

Click "Advanced" or "More Options" to view any hidden devices. Mute or completely lower the volume sliders on all other "Output" devices. Restart your computer to ensure that these changes take effect.
