How to Remove the Window Crank in a Jeep Wrangler

Save

A Jeep Wrangler's manual window crank can be removed in seconds. If you are installing a car stereo, or you need to remove the door panel for other repairs, taking the crank off the door is usually one of the first steps. The crank itself is held in place by a metal spring clip shaped like "Omega" from the Greek alphabet. This clip needs to be disengaged first.

Things You'll Need

  • Crank removal tool
  • Cotton towel

Using a Crank Remover

  • Line up the hook end of the removal tool with the crank's handle.

  • Slip the tip of the tool under the base of the Wrangler's window crank.

  • Latch the hook end of the removal tool onto the spring and pull. The window crank should come off.

  • Place the window crank to the side for later.

  • Collect the metal spring and place it next to the crank you just removed.

Using a Cotton Towel

  • Slide a cotton towel between the crank and the Wrangler's door panel.

  • Pull the towel inward.

  • Pull the towel back and forth until it catches onto an end of the metal clip. The crank should come off.

  • Pull the crank off the door if it did not completely drop out.

  • Discard the crank if you plan on replacing it, but keep the metal clip for later use.
