If you purchased your mobile phone through Virgin, it came locked to that network. This means that you cannot use your phone with a different mobile service provider until you get an unlock code. This can be very inconvenient if you find yourself traveling abroad, as you will have to pay high roaming fees to use the phone on your trip.
Things You'll Need
- Unlock code
Call your Virgin Mobile customer service representative. Dial 1-888-322-1122 if you are in the United States, or visit the company's website (see references). Ask them for an unlock code for your mobile phone. If you have completed your service contract, they may give it to you, although they are under no obligation to do so. If they don't, you can purchase a code.
Dial *#06# on your phone. This will bring up your IMEI (international mobile equipment identification) number. This is a 15-digit code that phone companies use to identify your phone.
Look for an online store that sells unlock codes, such as UnlockToTalk and GSMLiberty.
Type your IMEI number into the website. Choose the make and model of your phone from the drop-down menus and then select Virgin Mobile as your service provider. Enter your credit card or PayPal information and a valid e-mail address.
Retrieve the unlock code from your e-mail and write it down .
Turn off your Virgin Mobile phone and take out the SIM (subscriber identity module) card. This is the white rectangular plastic card underneath your phone's battery. Insert a SIM card from a different network and turn your phone back on. You will get a message requesting an unlock code.
Type in the code that you received in the e-mail. Press “OK” and your phone will restart. When it comes back on you will see the name of the new network at the top of your phone's screen.
