How to Prepare a Windows Backup Reinstall
Microsoft Windows includes a fairly simple backup and restoration utility known as the Backup and Restore Center. Creating backups of your hard drive is an important part of keeping your data safe, should anything happen to your computer. Hopefully, you will never need to use the backup, but it's nice to know it's there when you do. If the time comes when you must reinstall you Windows backup image, it may all feel a bit overwhelming. Preparing your computer to reinstall your backup image is in fact quite simple and will completely restore your computer.

Connect the external hard drive containing your Windows backup image.

Insert the Windows DVD and restart the computer. Boot from the disc.

Select "Repair Your Computer" from the "Install Windows" screen. System Recovery will detect your Windows installation; select it and click "Next."

Select "System Image Recovery." Windows will detect your backup image on the external hard drive. You can browse to it if it is not automatically detected. Click "Next." Adjust any options you wish to set (reformat the drive, repair any disk errors) and click "Next."

Review your recovery options. Click "Finish" and confirm the action. The System Recovery tool will begin reinstalling Windows on your computer's internal hard drive from the Windows backup you previously created.
