How to Mount Australian Medals

How to Mount Australian Medals thumbnail
Mounting Australian medals is a simple process.

Australian medals are given to members of the Australian military for distinguished service and special services rendered to the government and country. Mounting Australian medals uses the same process as mounting any other military medals. Most medals must be slightly lengthened before mounting. After you mount a medal to a backer board and attach it to a mounting bar, it is a simple matter to attach the mounting brooch to a uniform or display case. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length of the medal. Medals must be at least 3 1/4 inches long to mount properly. If your medal is smaller than this, then you will need to extend the length of the ribbon until it is between 3 1/4 and 5 inches long.

    • 2

Gently pry open the ring holding the ribbon onto the medal with pliers. Remove the old ribbon by sliding it out of the hole.

    • 3

Cut a 5-inch length of replacement ribbon. Make sure the new ribbon matches the original ribbon exactly.

    • 4

Place your thumb 1 inch away from one edge of the ribbon. Fold the bottom inch of ribbon into thirds. Fold the outside thirds of the ribbon in half lengthwise, essentially creating a fan crease on the outside edges of the ribbon. Slide the folded edges of the ribbon through the medal ring.

    • 5

Slide the medal back onto the medal ring and pinch the ring closed with the pliers. Fold the smaller edge of the ribbon toward the top edge of the other side of the ribbon, essentially folding the ribbon in half. Pull the medal ring down to the folded portion of the ribbon. If you do this correctly, the ribbon should now make a triangular fold on the edge of the ribbon nearest to the medal. Flatten all folds with your fingers.

    • 6

Cut a piece of backer board to fit behind the ribbon. Use double-stick tape to tape the ribbon to the backer board.

    • 7

Fold the top edge of the ribbon down to make a loop at the top of the ribbon. Slide a medal mounting bar through this loop. Use transparent tape to sew the loop in the ribbon tightly against the mounting bar to hold the medals onto the mounting bar.

Wear the medals with the proper Australian uniform, or place the medals in a display case.
