How to Clean a Penn Reel

How to Clean a Penn Reel thumbnail
A clean and well maintained reel can last for many years.

Penn fishing reels have been in production since 1932. These reels have long been a top choice of many anglers for fresh and saltwater fishing. As all fishermen know, a reel can become dirty, and if not properly cleaned the reel can become corroded with rust, dirt and grime. Adequately cleaning your Penn fishing reel periodically will ensure that you'll be able to fish with the reel for many days into the future.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Unscrew the reel from the rod. Pull the reel off of the rod.

    • 2

Fill a container with a mild detergent and warm water. Place the reel into the container and let it soak for an hour.

    • 3

Remove the reel and rinse it off in warm water. This will remove any soapy residue and dirt that loosened while soaking.

    • 4

Dry the reel off thoroughly with a towel. Blow any remaining dirt off of the reel with an air compressor or a blow dryer. This will also help to expedite the drying process.

    • 5

Remove the screw from the reel handle center if a screw is present. Turn the handle counterclockwise then pull it off the reel.

    • 6

Remove the screws holding the faceplate together. Blow off any remaining dirt or debris with the air compressor. Use a damp towel to remove any stubborn grime that can't be blown off.

    • 7

Apply a light coat of reel grease to the both sides of the spindle and its axis connecting it to the reel handle. Reassemble the reel. Wipe away any excess grease then reattach it to the rod.

Tips & Warnings

  • All Penn reel models will vary slightly in disassembly as to the placement of screws. If you have difficulty in disassembly, consult a Penn dealer or visit a bait and tackle shop to have your reel examined and cleaned.

  • Do not apply too much reel grease to the spindle. A light coat is recommended because the grease could transfer to the fishing line.
