How to Use Pay Phones in the U.S. thumbnail
Pay phones offer the ability to connect with others.

Pay phones are public phones that allow users to make phone calls to mobile and landline numbers for a fee. These calls are usually limited to 15 minutes depending on the pay phone. You can pay for your pay phone call using coins, a calling card or collect phone service if the recipient's phone accepts this option. If paying by coin, additional time may be purchased using additional funds.

Instructions

    • 1

Pick up the receiver and wait for a dial tone.

    • 2

Insert coins or follow calling card instructions to place a call. If calling collect, press "0" to reach an operator.

    • 3

Dial the 10-digit number. If calling out of state, dial "1" and the 10-digit phone number. If placing a collect phone call, the operator will assist you.
