How to Use Weaving in Christian Art
Palm weaving is used within the Catholic culture to show homage to Christ during the season of Lent. Palm leaves are woven into objects and blessed by the priest. The palm weaving is then taken home and displayed for everyone to see. The basic design of the weaving is used within other Christian faiths using objects other than palms to create a weaving. It is possible to weave a cross from either palm leaves or flat basket reed. The process is the same, and the symbolism of the cross reflects a belief in God.
Instructions

1
Cut one piece of 1/2-inch basket reed 24 inches long.
-
2
Close the drain on the sink. Place the cut piece of basket reed in the sink and cover with water. Let it soak in the water for 5 minutes.
-
-
3
Remove the basket reed from the sink. Fold the piece of reed in half but do not crease. Point the ends of the basket reed straight down.
-
4
Slide the top leg of the fold to the left to form a 90-degree angle. A small triangle is formed in the middle.
-
5
Fold the triangle made in the center of the basket reed straight down and crease.
-
6
Fold the bottom leg straight up to so it is flush with the left leg and crease.
-
7
Rotate the legs so the left leg is now pointing straight up. Fold the leg that is pointing straight up over the center and down to form a square in the middle of the cross. Crease along the fold.
-
8
Hold on to the center of the cross and flip it over so the back is now the front. The process will move the leg that is pointing to the right and change it to pointing left. The back of the square in the middle is now at the front of the cross.
-
9
Look at the center of the cross. Notice the top layer of the square is open from the top to the bottom. Slide the end of the basket reed pointing down through the opening of the square.
-
10
Pull the end straight up until it is flush with the center. This process locks the weaving together in a woven knot.
-
11
Lay the secured piece of basket reed on the table to form the letter L. Notice the square made in the woven knot. Slide the end of the arm that is facing to the right under the top layer in the woven knot. Continue to slide it through the opening until the loop left on the right side of the knot is 1 1/2-inches long. Crease at the fold. This is the first arm of the cross.
-
12
Continue working with the same end of the basket reed. Fold the end to the back and slide the end into the center square. Continue sliding the end until the top layer is 1 1/2 inches long. Fold along the crease. Cut off the excess end that protrudes past the center square. This is the second arm to the cross.
-
13
Flip the cross over. Slide the end of the arm that is pointing straight up through the top layer in the woven knot. Continue to slide it through the opening until the loop left on the top of the knot is 1 1/2-inches long. Crease at the fold. This is the top of the cross.
-
14
Continue working with the same end of the basket reed. Fold the end to the back and slide the end into the center square. Continue sliding the end until the top layer is 2 inches long. Fold along the crease. Cut off the excess end that protrudes past the center square. This is the bottom of the cross.
