Becoming listed on Google, Yahoo, MSN or other major search engines is a great way to create free and relevant traffic to a website. Search engine optimization (SEO) helps to optimize web pages in order to get the most and the most relevant hits. Keywords are extremely important in order for people to locate a website. Their placement throughout the web page is crucial to a search engine picking up the web page. Top search engines are becoming more selective about which sites get in, so a site must have helpful, unique subject matter.

Keywords should be identified from website content and used frequently. Research and choose keywords. Imagine what keywords a person trying to find a web page might type. The target keywords should align with a web page's content. Target keywords should be two words or longer in length. Phrases made of two or more keywords will increase the odds of a page coming up in a search engine.

Keywords need to appear as much as possible and show relevance to the website. Target keywords need to appear in critical places on web pages. A page's HTML title tag is the most important location for keywords. Titles should be short, pique people's curiosity, and made around two or three phrases that are most relevant to the page. Search engines also look for keywords to appear near the tops of web pages, so it is good if keywords are used in the first paragraph.

There are major search engines that cannot follow frame links. There should be another method for them to enter and index the website, either through the use of meta tags or smart design.
