How to Register Off Road Vehicles
In many states, to legally operate an Off-Road/Off-Highway vehicle (OHV) on public lands or recreation areas, you will need a sticker affixed to the vehicle. Some states, like Texas, only require that you buy a decal sticker from the dealer or motor vehicle office and affix it to the back of the vehicle. No paperwork is required to actually register the OHV. Other states, like California, require that the vehicle be registered with the DMV and verified by a representative. Once verified, you will get a registration sticker to affix to the vehicle.

Tow the off-road vehicle to a local department of motor vehicles office. This is not required in all states, so check with your state's DMV to see if this is necessary.

Complete a registration form. Enter the name and address of the registered owner as well as the make and model, VIN and odometer reading of the vehicle.

Show proof of insurance, if necessary. Not all states require insurance on OHVs. In New York, however, you must have a minimum $10,000 in property damage coverage, $50,000/$100,000 for death coverage, and $25,000/$50,000 for bodily injury.

Provide the manufacturer's Certificate of Origin endorsed to the dealer or a certified copy of the factory invoice to the dealer, and the bill of sale from the dealer to you. If you purchased from a private owner, show an endorsed title and bill of sale. Also provide proof of your identity (e.g., state-issued driver's license).

Show the DMV representative or another authorized representative the off-road vehicle to verify the VIN. This step is only required in states where you must bring the OHV to the office.

Pay applicable sales tax and fees to register the off-road vehicle. Fees vary per state and vehicle.

Affix the registration sticker issued after all paperwork is complete to the OHV plate.
