How to Remove an M4 Front Sight


The M4 is essentially a shortened version of the M16A2 service rifle currently issued to U.S. military service members. This weapon has all the attributes of the gas-operated, air-cooled M16A2 ,and fires a 5.56 mm round. The weapon features adjustable front and rear sights. It also features a shortened barrel, and some models have a collapsible stock. The front sight post of the M4 can be adjusted for elevation purposes, or it can be removed for maintenance or replacement.

Things You'll Need

  • Pointed object (cleaning rod, punch or dummy round)
  • Unload the weapon completely. Remove the magazine. Pull the charging handle to the rear. Visually inspect the chamber to ensure that no live ammunition is present.

  • Point the muzzle in a safe direction. Locate the front sight detent pin adjacent to the front sight post.

  • Depress the detent pin with a pointed object such as a punch, cleaning rod, or a dummy round.

  • Turn the front sight post towards the "Up" arrow. Continue turning the post until it is completely unscrewed.

  • Pull the front sight post off of the weapon.
