Carpet Glue Adhesive Removal on Terrazzo Floors

Consider yourself lucky if you've lifted the old carpet in your new home and found terrazzo floors. Terrazzo is a flooring material that originated in Italy. Marble pieces are nested in cement to make interesting and unique mosaics. These beautiful floors are quite durable. However, chipping away at old carpet adhesive may chip through the finish and damage the terrazzo. The best way to remove carpet adhesive from terrazzo floors is to soften it with adhesive remover, then scrub it away. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Stir or shake the carpet adhesive remover container.

    • 2

With a squeegee, apply a generous amount of adhesive remover (enough to coat the old carpet adhesive) to the floor in an even layer.

    • 3

Leave the adhesive remover to penetrate and soften the carpet adhesive for the manufacturer-recommended time (usually between 20 and 60 minutes).

    • 4

Scrape the carpet adhesive from the floor with the squeegee. Remove as much of it as you can by sliding it onto a flat sheet of plastic or cardboard, and dumping it into a nearby lined trashcan.

    • 5

Soak a rag with fresh adhesive remover, and wring it out gently.

    • 6

Wipe up any residual adhesive softener or adhesive from the floor.

    • 7

Repeat Steps 1 through 6 if any adhesive remains on the floor.

    • 8

Mop the floor with plain water.

Tips & Warnings

  • When applying carpet adhesive remover, it is easier to work in manageable (roughly 5-square-feet) sections rather than tackling the whole floor at once.

  • Find an adhesive remover designed to remove pressure sensitive adhesive (the kind often used on terrazzo floors), if possible.
