How to Make a Wooden Squat Stand
A squat stand is an essential piece of equipment for serious weight lifters. The stand, sometimes called a squat rack, holds the barbell up so that lifters can take the bar on to their shoulders from a squatting position. The squat lift accomplished from this position targets muscle groups in the lower back and legs. You can build a squat stand from scrap 2-by-4s at very little cost. These homemade stands are not only less expensive than commercial squatting cages, but are also more compact, and you can store them in a closet of corner, completely out of the way.
Things You'll Need
- Six 2-by-4-inch boards
- Three bags of quick drying concrete
- Two 5-gallon buckets
- 3-inch wood screws
- Circular saw
Instructions

1
Cut two 2-by-4s that are 46 inches long, two that are 72 inches long and two that are 48 inches long, using a circular saw.
-
2
Sandwich three of the boards, with a 48-inch board in the front, a 46-inch board in the middle and a 72-inch board at the rear.
-
-
3
Screw the three boards together with 3-inch wood screws in a zigzag pattern down both the front and the back face of the sandwich.
-
4
Repeat the process of stacking and screwing together the boards to form the second leg of the stand. Be careful to stack the boards correctly so the top of the leg has the J shaped catch necessary for safely lifting the bar.
-
5
Center each of the legs in a 5-gallon bucket. Put the level end of the leg down in the bucket and the J-shaped catch up.
-
6
Mix the quick concrete and add it to the bucket about an inch at a time. Before adding another layer of concrete make sure that the leg is still level. Continue adding concrete until about a bag and a half of concrete, or 75 lbs., are in each bucket.
-
7
Allow the concrete to dry completely before using the stand.
