How to Replace an Alternator Belt on a Volvo 740 GL

The alternator belt on the Volvo 740 GL fit over pulleys on the alternator and the air conditioner motor. A second drive belt connected to the air conditioner motor turns the pulley on the motor, which in turn makes the belt that connects to the alternator spin. This keeps the alternator working and charging the battery. When the belt wears out, it could snap in two. This would cause the alternator to stop charging the battery and the Volvo would turn off.

Things You'll Need

  • 12-mm socket
  • 11-mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Crow bar
  • Loosen the bolts that hold the alternator onto the alternator mounting bracket. The bolt on the bottom, front of the alternator requires a 13-mm socket for removal and the bolt on the bottom left of the alternator requires a 11-mm socket.

  • Push the alternator down to create slack on the alternator belt.

  • Pull the belt off the alternator pulley and off the air conditioner pulley.

  • Place the new belt onto the alternator pulley and the air conditioner pulley.

  • Place a crow bar between the radiator shroud and the alternator. Pull back on the crow bar to reduce the amount of slack on the alternator belt.

  • Tighten the 13-mm bolt and the 11-mm bolt with their respective sockets while you maintain pressure on the crow bar.
