How to Become a Baltimore County Fire Fighter
Baltimore County, Maryland, which includes the city of Baltimore, has a population of nearly 800,000 people, according to the City Data website. Public service jobs like firefighters are always in demand in large metropolitan areas like Baltimore. Before you can become a firefighter in Baltimore County, you must complete a few prerequisites.

Apply online at the Baltimore County website and submit your application for the fire department (see References). To apply, you must be at least 18 years old, possess a high school diploma, have a driver's license, and pass a background check and drug test.

Take the written exam for the fire department upon invitation. Your application must be approved, and your test will be scheduled by the department. The test is 100 questions and covers topics like interpersonal skills, reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, driving laws, math and sequencing. You will have 2 1/2 hours to take the test, and you must pass it to be invited to continue in the program.

Take the Fire Department's physical abilities test upon invitation. Applicants who pass the written test will be invited to take the physical ability test. The physical abilities test includes seven stations, and applicants will be graded on all stations. According to the department website, to pass the test, users must pass the CPR and ladder climb tests, and you cannot become a firefighter without passing those two tests. Upon successful completion of the test with a satisfactory score, applicants can be offered a Probationary Firefighter position in Baltimore County. The probationary period lasts for two years before you can become a full member of the force.
