Fix a Crash of the HP DV9000 Display

The HP DV9000 notebook has 2GB of RAM, an NVIDIA graphics card, a built-in webcam and a bright 17-inch LCD display. These features make the DV9000 a good choice for watching movies, chatting with friends and more. But these features are useless if your display crashes. If your HP DV9000 display crashes, several potential fixes exist.

Enter your battery's serial number on the HP website to see if your laptop's battery was recalled. The serial number is on a bar code on the underside of your battery pack. HP determined several DV9000 battery packs to be defective. This could be a source of your display crashes. Your battery indicator may show that the battery is charged, but a defective battery can malfunction and drain quickly, completely shutting down your computer even when you think you have plenty of battery life. If your display goes dark only when you are using battery power, a defective unit may be to blame. If your HP DV9000 was part of the recall, provide HP with a mailing address to receive a replacement battery.

Perform a "hard reset," as recommended by HP. This method fixes a display crash that occurs during bootup. If the display crash is persistent or occurs on bootup, a hard reset often fixes the glitch. For a hard reset, disconnect all USB devices, unplug your AC adapter and remove the battery. Press and hold the power button for at least 15 seconds, then reconnect the AC power adapter and boot the computer back up. This may fix the display crash.

Contact HP technical support if the hard reset does not prevent your HP DV9000 display from crashing. Call 800-474-6836 for technical support 24 hours a day. If basic at-home troubleshooting is ineffective, your computer may have a major issue that requires professional help.
