How to Use an RCA Piggyback Cable

RCA piggyback cables are essentially splitters, allowing two sources to be plugged into one set of RCA jacks. Piggyback cables are useful in larger systems that have more devices than inputs, or have multiple devices needing a certain type of connection, such as in a recording monitor loop. Piggyback RCA cables are inexpensive devices given the amount of flexibility they afford, and are simple to install even for the audio/video novice.

Things You'll Need

  • RCA piggyback cables
  • Source devices
  • Receiver
  • Access the rear of both source devices and the receiving device (receiver). Locate the RCA outputs on the sources, and the single set of RCA inputs on the receiver.

  • Plug the RCA piggyback cables from the output of the first source device into the chosen RCA input on the receiving device.

  • Route an additional set of standard RCA cables from the second device into the RCA female inputs on the rear of the RCA piggyback cables.

Tips & Warnings

  • Only have one source on at any given time to avoid possible overload or damaging feedback along the RCA chain.
