Free Instructions for a Macrame Plant Hanger thumbnail
Any pot can become a hanging plant with a macrame plant holder.

Hanging planters allow you to decorate your home with live plants that complement your decor and your outdoor garden. If you don't have room for an outdoor garden, hanging plants give you a place to garden outside the reach of children and pets. You can also create a small kitchen garden this way by growing herbs and vining produce. Though hanging systems can be expensive, you can easily create your own hanging system for pennies. Instructions

    • 1

Cut four lengths of cord twice as long as you want the arms of your planter to be, plus 6 inches. Cut four more cords four times as long as your first set of cords. If you want a planter with 3-foot-long arms, you'll need four cords 6 feet, 6 inches long and four cords about 25 feet long. This seems like a lot, but the weaving stitch uses a lot of cord.

    • 2

Divide your cords into two groups containing two long and two short cords. Gather the ends of the cords in one of your groups together. Bend the ends down over the body of the cords to form a loop. Push the ends through the loop and pull tight to make a half-granny knot.

    • 3

Spread the cords out vertically in front of you with the knot furthest away from you. Arrange them so the short cords are in the center with the long cords on either side. They are A through D from left to right.

    • 4

Bring cord A to the right under B and C and over D. Bring cord D to the left over B and C and up through the loop created by A. Pull A and D snug to create your first half-hitch knot. Keep tying half hitch knots this way down to about 3 inches before the middle of your center cords. Repeat with the second set of cords. They are 1 to 4 from left to right.

    • 5

Lay cord group A to D horizontally with the woven part to the left. Lay 1 to 4 vertically with the woven part pointing away from you. Arrange cords 1 to 4 perpendicular over cords A to D. Weave cord A over and under cords 1 to 4. Weave cords B through D through cords 1 to 4 also, creating a square mat in the center.

    • 6

Tie half-hitch knots in both sets of cords, starting at the edges of the square mat and continuing to about 2 inches before the end. Tie the ends off in a half-granny knot.

    • 7

Bring all the arms up to make sure they're even. Pry open a 3-inch jump ring and wiggle the knots of all four arms onto it. Squeeze it closed with pliers. Settle your pot on the mat and hang.
