How to Install HughesNet 9000

The HughesNet (HN) 9000 is a modem that receives Internet signal via a Satellite antenna. Installing the modem is much more complicated than installing a DSL or cable modem because you need to also install the satellite antenna at the same time. The modem also needs to be configured to work with the antenna including a process called "commissioning," as well as setting appropriate GPS locations.

    • 2

Connect an Ethernet cable from the back of the modem to a computer.

    • 3

Open a web browser and type in "169.254.0.1," then press "Enter." You can only access this address if you are connected to the modem and have not commissioned it yet.

    • 4

Click the icon in the upper right corner of the interface to open the advanced controls.

    • 5

Enter the Terminal Site Name provided by your Internet Service Provider, then select "0949505" from the drop-down menu next to "A Code."

    • 6

Select "0749" from the drop-down menu next to "B Code," then select "00103" from the drop down-menu next to "C Code." Select the "U Code" value provided by your Internet Service Provider from the drop-down menu.

    • 7

Enter the latitude and longitude values as given by your GPS receiver, then click "Submit Installation Parameters."

    • 8

Run the satellite receive and transmit cables from the outdoor location where you are going to mount the antenna to the indoor location where you are going to place the modem. Connect the "receive" cable to the top connector on the back of the modem and the "transmit" cable to the bottom connector. If you are not comfortable installing the cable from the outside to inside, have it professionally installed to avoid potential injury.

    • 9

Screw the antenna mount into the roof, then place the antenna into the mount.

    • 10

Connect a DAPT between the receive cable coming from the modem and the antenna. Connect the transmit cable coming from the modem to the antenna. The DAPT can be obtained from the Internet Service Provider.

    • 11

Follow the onscreen instructions on the DAPT to point and angle the antenna correctly, then when the DAPT shows "Pointing Done," secure the antenna in the mount.

    • 12

Disconnect the receive cable from the DAPT and connect it straight into the antenna. The modem will automatically begin downloading updates and software. It will commission itself. Once it is finished, installation is complete.
