1
Measure the floor surface. You aren't trying to be exact for an estimate, so just measure the width and length of the overall floor, not every nook and cranny. Multiply the numbers together to get the area. Round up to be on the safe side. For example, if the area comes out to be 105 square feet, round up to 110 feet. You will need this measurement for flooring

2
Measure the length of countertops from corner to corner for counter purchases that work with linear feet, such as Formica. For other products such as granite, or similar stone work, measure the square footage. Do this by measuring the length and width of the countertops and multiplying them together. You will need these measurements for counter replacement.

3
Decide whether you are going to paint or install new cabinets. If installing new ones, measure the length of the old ones so that you can get an idea of how many you need in the new style. Measure both top and bottom cabinets and make note of the separate measurements.

4
Go to a home improvement store and look at overall prices of appliances in the type and brand you are wanting to replace. For example if you want a stainless steel refrigerator, there is no need to look at any other type. Compare prices and write down an rounded number for the appliances. In other words, if you see stainless steel refrigerators range from $1,200 to $2,000 depending on brand and size, estimate toward the higher end of $2,000 to be on the safe side, unless you know you are not willing to spend more than a certain amount. Write down the prices for all appliances

5
Look at countertops to determine the type you want. Use your measurements and the price list next to the cabinets to determine the basic cost. Multiply the measurement by the price to come up with the amount and write it down. Ask a store worker if the price listed includes installation. If it does not, ask what installation costs. It is generally based on the measurements. Write down the labor costs as well.
-
6
Look at flooring and choose the kind you want. Multiply your measurements by the price of the flooring to determine the basic cost. Write this down, as well as the installation cost. Also ask how much floor removal is, since this price is usually separate.
-
7
Look at new cabinets to decide on the kind you want. Take the price of the cabinets and multiply it by the number you will need to fill the same space. If you are going to add additional cabinets or an island, include that cost as well. Write down the cost of the cabinets as well as the cost of removal and installation. Remember to always round up. If you are just going to paint the cabinets, look at the supplies needed, such as paint brushes, primer, sandpaper, paint and drop cloths and do a rough guess on the overall cost.
-
8
Add up all the costs that you have determined for the various kitchen items. Round the final total up to insure you have enough to cover any extras. For example if the final total comes to $22,500, round it to $23,000, or if you want to truly be safe, round it to $25,000.
