How to Reduce a System Idle Process

The "System Idle Process" in Windows displays the percentage of the Central Processing Unit (CPU) that is currently not being used by any other processes. Even though it may look like the process is using the majority of the CPU (it will show a very high percentage of the CPU being used), it's merely a placeholder that informs Windows of the CPU resources not being used. To reduce the "System Idle Process" you'll need to start using more resources.

Instructions

    • 1

Start a video game on your computer. Games tend to need heavy amounts of resources, effectively lowering the amount of CPU idling.

    • 2

Run applications that make use of your CPU when it becomes idle. Examples of such software include that of the "World Community Grid" or Stanford's "Folding@home" project. (See Resources.)

    • 3

Open a video or audio file on your computer.

    • 4

Burn a CD or DVD. Likewise, creating an image file of an inserted disc will also reduce your CPU idling significantly.

    • 5

Copy large amounts of data to a disk drive, such as one you might use for backup. Copying many files (even if they're not overly large individually) uses noticeable amounts of CPU resources.
