Interior Decorating With Black & Blue

Interior Decorating With Black & Blue thumbnail
Pair a blue desk with a black chair for unexpected color in your furniture.

Black is a neutral color that goes with nearly any color you can imagine, including blue. Blue is a cool color that tends to invoke calmness. Both colors can lend a sophisticated look to a room, if put together right. Lighter shades of blue work best with black, unless you mix in a light, neutral color, such as white or cream, to keep the room balanced. Light blue with a few black highlights will work best in a small room, as dark colors can consume a room making it feel even smaller. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Paint the walls with a light shade of blue or another light color if you have a lot of dark furniture or accessories. Patterns, even if only on one wall, are another option. Black, blue and white stripes, polka dots, geometrical shapes or even black, blue and gray argyle can add interest to the room. Use white wainscoting on the lower portion of the walls if you want to use a dark shade of blue on the higher half.

    • 2

Use furniture in black, blue, light wood tones or white. For example, tone down a large, black sofa with white or light blue pillows and armchairs in the same fabric. Balance black bedroom furniture with light blue bedding. Alternatively, use upholstered seating with black wooden legs and black tables and dressers. Paint some of your wood furniture blue if you can't paint the walls.

    • 3

Hang window treatments that play off the walls and furnishings. Patterned curtains with blue or black designs that complement your decor are ideal against solid-colored walls.

    • 4

Decorate the walls with artwork, framed pictures or mirrors that include black. Using black in small doses around the room against light blue or white walls will make the black stand out without becoming too overwhelming.

    • 5

Accessorize the room with decorative touches that pull the design together. For example, choose a rug that incorporates all the colors in the room, lamps, candles, floral arrangements or decorative knickknacks or sculptures.
