Internal Revenue Service 1040 EZ Instructions
Both single and joint filers may use for 1040EZ to do a simple tax return. This form has fewer steps and allows you to file your taxes more quickly and easily. You cannot use it if you intend to itemize deductions, take most credits or have self-employment income. Make sure you file form 1040EZ before April 15 each year to avoid penalty and interest charges.

File 1040EZ as of 2010 if your gross income was greater than $9,350 ($18,700 for married couples filing jointly) and you are single or filing jointly without any dependents. If you are someone else's dependent, you must file if your unearned income is more than $950 or your earned income exceeds $5,700.

Provide your name, Social Security number and contact information on the top of the form. If you have a preprinted label, skip this section and place the label in it when you are done filling out the form. Correct errors on your label by crossing them out and writing the correct information beside them.

Check the box at the bottom of Part I if you would like to donate $3 of your taxes to the Presidential Election Campaign Fund. This donation does not affect your tax liability.

Report income on lines 1 through 6. You can find wage information on your W2 forms, which your employer(s) will give you by the end of January. If you have unemployment income, you will get a 1099-G form from the unemployment office that has your total unemployment income for the year.

Claim the Work Credit and Earned Income Credit on lines 8 and 9. The instructions for Form 1040EZ contain worksheets for figuring out if you are eligible for these credits and how much credit to take.

Calculate your tax on line 11 using tax tables. If the IRS owes you a refund, fill out information on line 12 to receive your refund by direct deposit. If you owe money, write a check and include it with your tax return.

Sign and date Form 1040EZ. Attach your W-2s or other tax forms and put the tax package in an envelope. Include a check in the envelope if you owe money to the IRS, but do not attach it to your form.

Mail your tax package to the IRS before April 15 to avoid tax penalties.
