How to Edit URLs

Internet Explorer introduced the Internet Shortcut file type that uses the .URL extension. A URL is short for Uniform Resource Locator and it represents the location of a Web page or website on the Internet. Many versions of IE recognize these files as items that are part of the "Favorites" menu. You can create an Internet shortcut from Internet Explorer by dragging the website's icon found next to the URL in the address bar. Edit any URLs in your computer by viewing the properties of each file and making the appropriate adjustments from there.

Instructions

    • 1

Right-click the URL shortcut from the Internet Explorer toolbar or Windows Explorer.

    • 2

Click "Properties" to open the dialog where you can adjust the Internet shortcut settings. Click the "Web Document" tab to see the URL.

    • 3

Edit the URL text box to another URL and click the "OK" button to save the changes.

Tips & Warnings

  • Rename the Internet shortcut as well to match your new URL changes by clicking on the file and pressing the "F2" key on your keyboard so you can change the name.
