How to Change the Backup Light in a 2002 Jetta

The backup lights in a 2002 Jetta alert anyone behind your vehicle that you have shifted into reverse. They also provide lighting when you back up your vehicle at night. Backup lights can burn out and it is sometimes difficult to tell that they are out, unless someone lets you know. As soon as you become aware that a backup light is out, it is imperative that you replace it.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the trunk lid of your Jetta. Remove the luggage compartment trim panel covering the taillight housing at both rear corners of the trunk.

    • 2

Release the two plastic clips holding the bulb housing in place. Remove the bulb housing. For all models, the rear lights are in one housing, including the backup light, the taillight and the brake light.

Replace the trim piece, close the trunk and properly dispose of the dead bulbs.

Tips & Warnings

  • You should always keep spare replacement bulbs for your Jetta in your vehicle. Replacing dead bulbs as soon as possible will minimize your risk of an accident.
