How to Refill Ink for an HP C4280

The HP C4280 printer uses the HP No. 74 (black) and HP No. 75 (color) ink cartridges. These cartridges cost $25 each to replace, as of October 2010. If you replace both of these cartridges five times a year, that is $250 on printing costs alone. You can reduce your printing costs dramatically by refilling these cartridges instead of replacing them. A refill kit will cost you about $20 and can be reused up to six times. That is over $200 in savings for the year. Not only will refilling the cartridges keep extra money in your wallet, but it helps reduce unnecessary waste in landfills. These cartridges are constructed from non-biodegradable materials that can take up to 100 years to degrade. Thousands of ink cartridges pile up in our landfills each day.

Instructions

  1. No. 74 Cartridge

    • 1

Lay newspaper down on your work surface. Refilling ink can be messy.

    • 2

Turn the printer off and remove the cartridge.

    • 3

Peel the label off the top of the cartridge. This exposes the fill chamber.

    • 4

Insert the syringe into the ink bottle and draw 20 milliliters of ink.

    • 5

Insert the needle into the fill hole and slowly inject the ink.

    • 6

Reinstall the ink cartridge and run one to three cleaning cycles per the printer's instructions.

    No. 75 Cartridge

    • 7

Peel the label off the top of the cartridge. This exposes three fill chambers, one for each ink color (yellow, magenta and cyan).

    • 8

Insert a toothpick into each chamber to determine the color. A new toothpick should be used for each chamber.

    • 9

Insert the syringe into the corresponding ink bottle and draw 6 milliliters of ink.

    • 10

Insert the needle into the corresponding chamber and slowly inject the ink. Repeat for each color.

    • 11

Reinstall the ink cartridge and run one to three cleaning cycles per the printer's instructions.
