How to Search for Gold Nuggets

How to Search for Gold Nuggets thumbnail
Even a small amount of gold is very valuable.

A gold nugget is a large piece of gold that has formed as a result of many smaller flakes of gold being welded together by erosion, and can often be located in a stream bed or gold vein. Hunting for gold nuggets can be a lucrative hobby, but it requires the right tools, a large amount of patience and a love of the outdoors. When a gold nugget is found, it can either be kept as a souvenir or sold for use in jewelry or electronics.

Research the area you want to hunt in for the most probable location for gold. Fertile areas can be located via gold maps that are available online. You can also consult with other gold enthusiasts online for recommendations. If you live in a location that is unlikely to harbor gold, research the nearest area you're willing to travel to.

    • 2

Purchase a sifting pan and a metal detector. Make sure that the metal detector you purchase is sensitive enough to detect small flakes of gold. Inquire with the manufacturer for detailed information about the metal detector that you're considering, or consult with gold-hunting enthusiasts online for recommendations.

Get a permit if you're planning on conducting large-scale mining operations, wish to mine in a location where a permit is required, or plan on using machinery that requires a permit, such as a dredge. Recreational gold hunting doesn't require a permit as long as it is done in locations that are open to recreational gold hunters, and it involves only certain tools, such as a metal detector, sifting pan, shovels and other similar equipment.

Hike to a stream that flows away from an area known to be fertile with gold. When it rains, small flakes of gold may be carried downstream, where they then collect together and form larger gold nuggets. Walk the stream and watch for small reflections in the water. If none are apparent, look for a rivet, dip or other abnormality in the stream's path that would act as a trap to catch the gold flakes. Sift through the sediment in that area. Separate any gold flakes you locate from the silt and place them in a secure container.
