How to Reinstall Compmgmt.msc

The Windows operating system comes equipped with many tools to assist you in managing various aspects of your computer, including the Computer Management Utility. This utility is located in the Windows system32 folder. If this file has been deleted accidentally, it may be necessary to copy the file from another Windows computer to the one with the faulty utility.

Things You'll Need

  • CD or jump drive
  • Windows computer with a working compmgmt.msc file
  • Insert a CD or jump drive into a Windows computer that has a working compmgmt.msc file.

  • Click the "Start" button and select "My Computer." Double-click the "Hard Drive" icon, then double-click the "WINDOWS" folder. Select the "system32" folder and locate the "compmgmt.msc" file.

  • Right-click "compmgmt.msc." Hover the mouse pointer over "Send to," then select the "CD Drive" or "Jump Drive" icon.

  • Insert the CD or jump drive that contains the compmgmt.msc file.

  • Click "Start," then select "My Computer." Double-click the "Hard Drive" icon, then double-click the "WINDOWS" folder. Select the "system32" folder.

  • Click "Start," then select "My Computer." Double-click the "CD Drive" or "Jump Drive" icon.

  • Click the "compmgmt.msc" file and drag it into the open system32 folder window. Once the file has been copied into the system32 folder, test the installation by clicking "Run" and typing "compmgmt.msc" into the text box. The Computer Management Utility should open in a new window.
