How to Remove the Front Hub From a 2002 Honda Civic
The front hub on the Honda Civic is part of the steering knuckle assembly and is a key component of the drive axle and suspension. It takes special tools to separate the hub from the knuckle, and this specific step should only be done by a professional. It is possible, however, to remove both the front hub and steering knuckle together from the car to transport it to a shop that can perform this task.
Things You'll Need
- Floor jack
- Jack stands
- Tire iron
- Punch and chisel
- Breaker bar and socket
- Pry bar
- Wrench
- Wire
- Paint and brush
- Pliers
- Two-jaw puller
Instructions
-
-
1
Raise the Civic's front end, and support it on jack stands. Remove the wheel for the corresponding hub.
-
2
Unstake the drive axle/hub nut with a punch and chisel. Loosen the nut with a large breaker bar and socket, wedging a pry bar between the wheel studs to prevent the hub from turning.

-
3
Unbolt and remove the brake caliper from the disc using a wrench, and hang it with a strong wire. Remove the caliper mounting bracket, and slide off the disc.
-
4
Mark the strut's relationship to the steering knuckle with paint or whiteout, then loosen the bolts connecting the strut to the knuckle using a wrench; don't remove the bolts yet.
-
5
Pull out the lock pin in the ball joint castle nut -- this might require pliers -- then loosen the nut. Separate the ball joint from the control arm with a puller. Remove the castle nut.
-
6
Unscrew the nuts, and disconnect the stabilizer bar's attaching link from the lower control arm using your wrench. Remove the bolts connecting the strut to the steering knuckle.
-
7
Swing the steering knuckle and hub away from the car until you free the drive axle from the hub. Support the axle with a strong wire.
-
8
Separate the steering knuckle from the strut, and remove the knuckle and hub from the car.
