How to Repair Stair Steps
Wooden stairs receive lots of wear and tear, so it's natural that they will require repair on occasion. Loose wooden steps can be fastened back into place, and any damaged areas can be repaired. Although a small repair may seem like something of a low priority to fix, it is important to address. The small repair could become worse or the safety of the stairs could be compromised. Things You'll Need
- Hammer
- Nail set
- 80-grit sandpaper
- Wood epoxy primer
- Poly brush
- Wood epoxy filler
- Putty knife
- 120-grit sandpaper
- Wood finish touch-up
- Paintbrush

Inspect the steps along the stairs in need of repair. Look for loose steps. Loose steps result from nails that have loosened over time.

Drive any loosened or raised nails back into place on the steps with a hammer. Set the nail below the surface of the step using a nail set.

Sand any damaged areas such as dents, gouges or scratches with 80-grit sandpaper to prepare the surface for repair.

Brush on a light coat of epoxy primer with a poly brush. Allow the epoxy to set for the specified time, commonly about 5 minutes.

Apply epoxy filler to the dents, gouges or scratches with the edge of a putty knife to pack it into the damaged wood. Allow the filler to dry.

Sand the repaired areas with 120-grit sandpaper, and apply a touch-up to the repairs with a paintbrush. Allow the touch-up to dry.
