How to Catch Mud Minnows
Mud minnows are small minnow-sized fish that are used by many anglers as bait. A variety of game fish are attracted to mud minnows when you are fishing brackish backwaters and inshore saltwater species. Although mud minnows are commonly available for purchase from many bait and tackle shops, many anglers prefer and enjoy catching their own minnows for bait. Knowing where to look and a few tricks can help fill the bait bucket with mud minnows for the next fishing trip.
Things You'll Need
- Minnow trap
- Bait (bread, shrimp or bacon)
- Small diameter rope or cord
- Aerated bait holder

1
Locate an area where mud minnows are active. Search out back waters and other areas where the water shallows and the current is not as strong.
-
2
Bait a minnow trap to attract mud minnows. Place cut up shrimp, bacon pieces, small bread balls and even pet food in the trap. Position the bait so that it is away from the trap opening.

3
Place the trap in the water so that the opening can be easily accessed by the mud minnows. Locate the trap in still waters, if possible, so that the minnows will not have fight current to enter the trap. Position the opening so that it is just below the water line at a level where minnows commonly swim.
-
4
Anchor the minnow trap so that rising tides or currents will not move it out of position or even carry it away. Tie one end of a small diameter rope or cord to the trap and the other end to a rock, limb or other stable object.
-
5
Check the minnow trap often for mud minnows. Remove trapped minnows and place in an aerated bait holder. Place more bait in the trap and reset in the water if more minnows are required for a fishing trip.
