Transform this t-shirt into a halter top in a few easy steps.

That pile of old t-shirts that don't fit quite right in the neck or arms has been staring at you for months. You can toss some of them, but others have too much sentimental value to part with. Don't worry, you can keep those shirts without taking up unnecessary closet space by transforming them into halter tops to be worn in the hot summer months, or even under a cardigan during the fall and winter seasons.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the t-shirt out flat on your work surface. Cut away the sleeves and collar of the shirt cutting away the seam of each along with the sleeves and collar.

    • 2

Lay the t-shirt so it is face down flat on your work surface. Cut through the back layer of the t-shirt from the bottom of one arm hole to the bottom of the other arm hole. This creates the low back of the halter and it also begins to create the halter's straps.

    • 3

Flip the t-shirt over so it is face up with the top half of the back you just cut free from the bottom half flipped up over top of the t-shirt.

    • 4

Cut down the center of the flipped up back of the t-shirt from the middle of the cut edge to the middle of the back of the collar. Now you should be able to split the two halves of the flipped up piece a little so they lay flatter than before.

    • 5

Trim down the two halves of the flipped up piece to create two 3-inch-wide strips to serve as the ties of your halter top. Do this by trimming the two halves along the inside, or the side along the collar.

    • 6

Put your halter top on and tie the straps in a double knot behind your neck.

Tips & Warnings

  • Select a t-shirt that is semi-form-fitting for the best result so that the halter doesn't hang open in the back or along the sides. A t-shirt that extends past the waistband of your pants is also preferred as the t-shirt may wear a little shorter once tied up around your neck.

  • Cut the sides of the halter top open along the seam, cut a fringe along the sides and tie the corresponding fringe pieces together to create a more-snug fit for t-shirts that prove to be too loose.
