How to Save a Background in Microsoft PowerPoint

Creating a Microsoft PowerPoint slide show involves researching information and compiling it into a single presentation. One way to wrangle the electronic slides into a cohesive presentation that looks as if everything belongs together is to create a common background and apply it to every slide. Doing so helps brand the information and keeps viewers on track. Saving PowerPoint backgrounds also makes them available for future presentations.

Instructions

    • 1

Open Microsoft PowerPoint. A single, white slide defaults on the screen.

    • 2

Click once on the placeholder "Click to add title" text box and press the "Delete" key to remove it from the screen. Click once on the placeholder "Click to add subtitle" text box and press the "Delete" key. The slide is now blank.

    • 3

Click the "Insert" tab at the top of the screen. Click the "Picture" button on the ribbon/toolbar below the tab. Browse to a digital image for the background, such as a company logo, and double-click the file name.

    • 4

Press and hold down the "Shift" key on the keyboard, click a corner of the image and shrink it down to size. Drag it into a corner or preferred place on the slide.

    • 5

Click the "Text Box" button on the ribbon/toolbar. The cursor changes to an upside down cross. Click and draw a text box onto the slide, such as along the bottom right.

    • 6

Type in the text box a message to appear on every slide background, such as the date or the title of the presentation.

    • 7

Highlight the text in the box and click the "Home" tab. Change the appearance of the text with the options in the "Font" section of the toolbar, including changing the text's font, color and size.

    • 8

Click the "Design" tab at the top of the screen. Hover the cursor, without clicking, over the options in the "Themes" section of the ribbon/toolbar. Watch how the slide background colors change. Click an actual theme to commit the change to the slide.

    • 9

Click the "File" tab at the top of the screen. Select "Save As." Type a name for the background, such as "BlueBackgroundTemplate." Save the file to the computer.
