Even after the face of the wallpaper is removed, you will likely be left with glue residue on the walls. It is necessary to get all of the glue off of the walls so that paint, tile or other wallpaper will adhere properly in the future. Things You'll Need

  • Bucket
  • 1/2 cup trisodium phosphate
  • Sponge
  • Wide putty knife
  • Wet rag
  • Empty spray bottle
  • 1 tbsp. baking soda or 4 tbsp. fabric softener

      Fill a bucket with one gallon of hot water. Add 1/2 cup of trisodium phosphate.

      Use a sponge to saturate the glue spots with the trisodium phosphate solution. Let it sit for five minutes.

      Scrape the glue from the walls with a wide putty knife. Wipe down the walls with a wet rag to remove any residue.

      For an alternative removal solution, mix 32 oz. of hot water in a spray bottle with 1 heaping tablespoon of baking soda or 4 tbsp. of fabric softener. Spray the mixture onto the glue spots, then scrape the glue away with a wide putty knife. Wash the walls with a wet rag to remove any residue.

  • Wear rubber gloves, protective eyewear and work in a well-ventilated area when using trisodium phosphate.
